Explore this very special tour with our qualified driver and historian.
Hampstead Heath is a very old stretch of land with grassy areas alongside a sandy bank and is one of the highest points of London. The heath resting on a band of clay, is wild and hilly in places, has beautiful ponds, very old woodlands and is home to Kenwood House and its estate.
The heath was famous for its highwaymen in days gone by including the infamous Dick Turpin. It wouldn't have been unusual back then, to see some of the captured highwaymen hanging from the trees as a warning to those who dare carry out robberies on this vast land. Dick Turpin is said to have been born at the Spaniards Inn and we can include a visit to this pub for a delicious lunch or a quick drink whilst enjoying the surroundings and the amazing history of the Inn itself. There are many historical links to the Inn such as great literary names, Byron, Keats and Dickens, and It is said that ghosts still like to visit this16th century building.
Hampstead is famous for its clever, free, artistic, musical and literary connections and has some of the most expensive homes in London. It is said that Hampstead has more millionaires within its boundaries than any other area of the UK. Hampstead High Street runs in the heart of the neighbourhood and has an abundance of shops, restaurants, famous pubs and cafes. The High Street is also adjoined by lots of narrow little lanes of neighbourhood charm.
Our tour includes a visit to The Magdala pub where Ruth Ellis killed her lover in 1955. She was the last woman to be hanged in Britain. Following on from this we will drop you off at the Heath where you are welcome to visit Kenwood House and it's amazing surroundings which are free to the public. When you have had your incredible trip around the estate, we will pick you up and take you for lunch (optional).
On your journey to Hampstead Heath, we can also include a visit to the incredible Highgate Cemetery. Tickets for Highgate Cemetery can be purchased from https://highgatecemetery.org/visit#featurephoto382
